Philip Boas : The Other Story of Batik's artist

The assessment of listening and speaking for daily conversation class is interviewing with a native speaker. I with three of my friends (Erlin, Fitri and Putri) tried to search a native speaker in some places in Yogyakarta. The first place was in Taman Sari Water Castle Yogyakarta, I met Team from Liverpool England, the second place was in Vrederburg bastion, I met Joia Döerjinio from the north of Italia. But from both of them, I didn’t get some interesting topic, because the time was not so well to make interview, they were also little busy.

Mr. Team and Miss Joia

Finally, I contacted my friend, he is foreign people who has been staying along in Jogja. His name is Philip Boas from Netherland. I know him because he was my client when I worked at TMC. I also often communicate with him by text message or e-mail. I made appointment with Mr. Philip to make an interview time. He didn’t agree that I will come to his house in a village, because he keeps sounds of neighbor that think negatively about him. So, he suggested coming to my home at 10 o’clock at morning at January 9th 2012.

Before staring interview, he gave knowledge how to learn English. He advised me in using English well. He is a Dutch, so he also learn English to communicate to other people in Indonesia. When he was at school he had to look at his book because at that time his school started experimenting how to learn English by auditory and it was made him crazy, so he need learn about grammar by reading book. Learn English is not enough by audio, but learn English must read some books in order that vocabulary will be increased. He also can speak French little bit. Actually, his wife was from French, when he lived together with his wife had to speak French.

Philip Boas
He told his name is Philip, his family name is Boas, and so his full name is Philip Boas. In Europe family name is so important and it is different than in Java. Family name usually was given by father to children who were born from complete parent, but if the children were born only have mother, the child will bring their mother’s name. he is about seventy years old, but he still looked fresh. If he go anywhere he always ride bicycle, so I wonder how amazing he is. Mr. Philip came from Netherland. Now, he is living in Jangkang village, Widodomartani, Sleman. He has been staying in Jogja since 1989. He got a grant a studying at ISI Yogyakarta, because there was a student exchange to study at ISI Yogyakarta.

Before that, in 1980 when he visited Yogyakarta firstly, he went to Sosrowijayan. There was Batik course than could study about Batik. He thought he can study it but actually it was not easy. He wanted to study Batik, but it was not allowed for foreigners because Batik is culture heritage. The people in there said that Mr. Philip had to choose: “you can’t study Batik, but you can study painting”. So, Mr. Philip decided that he did painting but he always searched everywhere that he could study Batik. He had to learn about how to handle canthing, how coloring Batik, how boiling the wax.

Many foreigner people were curious about Batik. They came to Indonesia after reading a book about Indonesia and Batik. They study all about Batik, and then they make a report about their activity and became some books. It was same with him, Mr. Philip came to Indonesia, looked for Indonesian people who could teach him about Batik. After studying Batik, Mr. Philip came back to Holland, he knew how to make Batik. However, he can’t make Batik in Holland, it was impossible he said. Because in the cost living in Holland is very expensive and Holland has bad climate. At least, he had some new ideas, he made a proposal to head section at ISI that he wanted to study Batik.

Now, his activity in Yogyakarta, he told me that he is studying the coloring technique of Batik. He told the process of Batik now is more difficult than before. In 1990, he always bought his wax easily, but now it is difficult to find some sellers of the wax. Quality of the wax now is bad, because it is not stick, easy to fell on the ground of cloth. Because now, the process of Batik is fast, they make the composition of Batik is not perfect, it is very suitable for fast production but not for long production.

His opinion about developing Batik in Indonesia he said that in 1990 Batik was not people wanted, Batik was not interesting. Now, because the President wants to maintain the culture of Indonesia, so the President suggests all employers wearing Batik clothes in their activity. So, that means is a lot of demand, the production is increasing, so many people started to do creating Batik. There are many Batik factories in Indonesia not only in Java, but all of areas in Indonesia creating Batik with their own characteristic. The point unbalanced between the cost of living that is increasing all the time and the price of product that cannot increase all the time. There is only they can do without calculate the cost of product. However, there were always people who love Batik as an art, they extended creating Batik, they assume Batik as culture, develop it with new ideas and technique.

He said that Batik is seasonal. One day Batik will be finished, not anymore people who create Batik because people is not interested with Batik again. Mr. Philip hoped Batik always will be there all the time because it is culture heritage. Before in 1990, Batik factories are very rich, there are a lot people create Batik, not like now. We can find factories batik rarely. Probably only 1 – 3 that still hold out, and they combine production by printing. So, Batik is not good quality.

He showed me some pictures of his Batik. It was very beautiful because he paint batik pola with freestyle, with his own style. It is something like new idea of Batik. He put his inspiration become a cloth of Batik. He said that he spent more than 1 year time to make it. He never sells it or exhibits his work, because he has to keep low profile. One day, he has said to me that his art he make because he has to not becoming crazy. Therefore, art is no commodity but a message to the world.
